Federal Support for American Coal
The Trump Administration recently announced more than $700 million in federal support for the U.S. coal industry, including investments in coal-fired generation, export infrastructure, and technologies that strengthen America's energy security. The initiative comes as U.S. power demand is projected to reach new record highs in both 2026 and 2027, reinforcing the need for reliable, dispatchable electricity generation to support economic growth. 2026 Summer Heat Wave & Grid Reliability
As extreme heat pushed electricity demand to record levels across much of the United States, the PJM Interconnection faced significant strain while serving more than 67 million people across 13 states and the District of Columbia. During the heat wave, PJM implemented emergency measures to maintain reliable service, while record demand, tightening reserve margins, and rising electricity prices highlighted the growing challenge of keeping pace with increasing power needs. PJM's most recent capacity auction also fell nearly 6.8 gigawatts short of its reliability target, with capacity prices once again reaching the market cap, underscoring the need for dependable, dispatchable generation. During periods of peak demand, energy sources such as coal continue to provide reliable electricity that supports grid stability and helps reduce the risk of power disruptions. [3][4][5]

Industrial & Electrical Demand
As reshoring manufacturing, expanding steel production, and electrification efforts accelerate, coal remains essential to powering industrial growth and supplying the materials needed to build modern infrastructure. Rising industrial demand continues to reinforce the importance of reliable baseload energy and metallurgical coal in supporting economic competitiveness. The U.S. Energy Information Administration projects electricity demand will reach a record 4,271 billion kWh in 2026, driven largely by manufacturing growth, electrification, and AI-powered data centers. Energy Poverty & Reliable Power Access
Around the world, reliable and affordable electricity remains directly tied to economic growth, healthcare, education, and quality of life. Coal continues to play a critical role in expanding dependable power access and helping developing nations meet rising energy demand without compromising grid reliability. Today, an estimated 655 million people still live without access to electricity, underscoring the need for proven, affordable energy solutions. [7][8]
