I am writing to you about an increasingly urgent issue related to our country’s current energy policy. It has come to my attention through the media and other economic realities that the promises of renewable energy seem to be more wishful thinking than they are practical and responsible—at least for the foreseeable future.
I am extremely concerned with the consequences of so quickly moving away from fossil-fuel-based power without careful regard for the unexpected outcomes we are now seeing play out. These include higher energy prices, weakening America’s energy independence, continued poverty in developing nations, and limitations to our quality of life-related to individual energy choices.
The U.S. energy industry has helped create the largest and most productive economy in history. Over the last several decades, its sustainability efforts have also been unequaled, helping to significantly reduce emissions here in the U.S. and set an example for the rest of the world.
As this energy transition moves forward, I believe our standard of value must be humanity—in balance with the environment—not the environment at all costs. Therefore, please accept this letter as an urgent caution to slow down and balance both sides of this critical public policy discussion more carefully.
